A Mind Well Directed
One's own self conquered is better than all other people; not even a god, a Gandharva, not Mara with Brahman could change into defeat the victory of a man who has vanquished himself, and always lives under restraint.

The verse begins, “One's own self conquered is better than all other people.” In its chapter, this image points toward quality of understanding rather than quantity of words. The water imagery emphasizes accumulation: a mind and a life are shaped by many small conditions, not one dramatic moment.
