The Practice of Returning

As soon as he has considered the origin and destruction of the elements (khandha) of the body, he finds happiness and joy which belong to those who know the immortal (Nirvana).

Reflection

The verse begins, “As soon as he has considered the origin and destruction of the elements (khandha) of the….” In its chapter, this image points toward the disciplines that support contemplative life. Rather than using change to create fear, the passage can sharpen tenderness for a life that cannot be held still. Because this is a historic English translation, test the teaching in experience rather than treating its wording as a demand for belief.
